Five Elements of Aboriginal: An Ocean Story
The sea loving Amis holds a special sea festival (fishing) for every summer each year. By watching the young men pulling out swarms of fish, they feel joy. There is actually a story lies behind this tradition from generation to generation. According to the legend, there was a warrior, who had floated to an island due to a shipwreck. He tried everything that he could have possibly be done to get out of the island, but all in vain. One day, a giant whale suddenly showed up in the middle of the sea saying: Let me give you a hand ! The giant whale started to teach him skills of shipbuilding, and finally the man successfully returned to his hometown safely. Since then, men started fishing during the summer, teaching everyone how to shipbuilding, and started offering wine and betel nuts for the festival, to show the deepest gratitude to the ocean.

That became “WasangShow”, which is Cantonese for “fashion show.” We hope that our original designs can enable more people to encounter the richly diverse traditions of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples.
